Educational Leadership & Secondary Education
The Department of Educational Leadership and Secondary Education program provides P-12 undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates and other school personnel with professional and discipline-based knowledge, abilities, and dispositions that (1) help all students learn and (2) lead to a State of Alabama Professional Educators’ certificate.
Degree Offerings
At the undergraduate level, Secondary Education Concentrations and Tracks (field disciplines) are offered through the department/college that houses the "pure" major. For example, the B.S. in Biology with Concentration in Secondary Education is offered through the College of Agricultural, Life, and Natural Sciences, whereas the B.A. in English with Concentration in Language Arts Secondary Education is offered through the English and Foreign Languages department. (There are many other programs available besides these; please consult the Undergraduate Bulletin for complete, current listings.)
Taking a Secondary Ed concentration and completing the course of study successfully leads to a Class B teaching certificate.
Students who hold both a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate may wish to pursue one of our master's programs—and along with the M.Ed. degree, a Class A teaching certificate. See the Graduate Catalog for complete, current listings.
Students who wish to pursue their education beyond a master's may be interested in an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, a non-doctoral route to a Class AA teaching certificate. See the Graduate Catalog for complete, current listings.
We sincerely welcome students to the Department of Educational Leadership and Secondary Education.
