Louis Crews Stadium Undergoes Major Energy-Efficient Lighting Upgrade

Alabama A&M University Football fans will see a major upgrade at Louis Crews Stadium for the 2025 season. New LED lighting will improve on-field visibility and reduce energy consumption while adding excitement to the gameday experience.

AAMU was recently approved for a $162,150.49 incentive from the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) EnergyRight program to support the major lighting upgrades, marking a significant step forward in campus sustainability and fan experience. The incentive – awarded through Huntsville Utilities – will help offset the cost of installing energy-efficient LED lighting at the stadium, which will lower long-term energy use, enhance visibility for night games, and support a safer, more vibrant environment for fans, athletes, and event staff.

The upgrade, scheduled for completion by late September, will be in place for the heart of the Bulldogs’ 2025 football season, offering stakeholders – from students and alumni to athletes and vendors – a brighter and more energy-responsible game-day experience.

“This is a win for everyone,” said Brian Shipp, Director of Facilities at AAMU. “Our fans will notice the improvement immediately, and behind the scenes, we’ll be reducing energy use and operating costs. It's the kind of forward-thinking investment that benefits the campus and the broader community.”

Carlton Spellman, AAMU’s Vice President for Business and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, echoed that enthusiasm, noting the impact beyond athletics. “We’re proud to partner with TVA and Huntsville Utilities on this initiative. It reflects our ongoing commitment to campus-wide sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and providing the best possible facilities for our students and visitors.”

As part of TVA’s mission to promote energy efficiency and economic development across the region, the EnergyRight program incentivizes qualified institutions and businesses to upgrade to more efficient systems. The University’s approved application includes plans for a full LED lighting retrofit at the stadium.

The project continues a larger campus-wide push by Alabama A&M to modernize infrastructure while aligning with national sustainability goals. With football season fast approaching, the stadium improvements will come just in time to shine a new light on the Bulldogs' home turf.
