Gala Weekend Events to Mark 150th Anniversary Milestone at AAMU

The Clark Sisters to Headline Gospel Celebration During AAMU Gala Weekend
In commemoration of its 150th Anniversary, Alabama A&M University has expanded its
annual Black Tie Scholarship Gala to a weekend of activities including a Gospel Celebration featuring The Clark Sisters, Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m. at the AAMU Event Center. The first-ever Gala weekend Gospel Celebration is a separately ticketed event to the
Gala benefiting the #AAMU150 campaign.
The Clark Sisters, born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, are credited for helping
to bring gospel music to the mainstream and are considered pioneers of contemporary
gospel. By the late 1960s they were performing together in church services, usually
singing songs written and arranged by their mother, gospel musician and choral director
Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. With a compelling, commanding fusion of styles as diverse as
blues, jazz, R&B, and classical, sisters Jacky, Twinkie, Karen, and Dorinda created
a sound that was new, fresh, and entirely their own, dubbed as The Clark Sound.
Proceeds from the Gospel Celebration event will further support AAMU’s ongoing 150th Anniversary Campaign – to raise $15
million in individual donations funding campus improvements, STEM infrastructure expansion,
and scholarships. The 25th Black Tie Scholarship Gala - the University’s premier annual
fundraising event - will take place Friday, April 25 at the AAMU Event Center.
Tickets for the Gospel Celebration are available NOW. For more information on the AAMU 150th Anniversary Campaign visit www.aamu.edu/150.
