Honoring a Legacy: Alabama A&M University Celebrates 150 Years with Founder's Week

Alabama A&M University invites the public to join in a momentous celebration of its 150th Anniversary during Founder’s Week, a tribute to the legacy of its visionary founder, Dr. William Hooper Councill. Among the events planned for this milestone occasion are two signature experiences that reflect the University’s deep historical roots and its enduring commitment to progress.

On Thursday, May 1, at 10:00 a.m., guests are invited to take part in the Dr. William Hooper Councill: Footprint Bus Tour. This guided bus tour will begin on the historic AAMU campus and travel through key locations in downtown Huntsville, tracing the life and legacy of Dr. Councill.

The tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the path of a pioneering educator and statesman who, against all odds, laid the foundation for what would become a pillar of academic excellence in the South. From campus landmarks to significant community sites, the experience provides a moving narrative of determination, leadership, and legacy. Attendees must reserve their seat in advance.

Later that day, at 1:30 p.m., the University will host “Coffee & Conversation on The Hill” in the Clyde Foster Auditorium. This panel discussion, moderated by President Daniel K. Wims, will bring together a distinguished group of leaders, alumni, and students for a meaningful dialogue about the past, present, and future of the University.

Among the panelists are Judge Lynn Sherrod, a trailblazer in Alabama’s judicial system; Dr. Oscar Montgomery, pastor and former AAMU vice president; Dr. Dorothy Huston, retired vice president for research and development; Mya Gibbs, a senior computer science major and 75th SGA Executive President; Damien Green, community advocate and former alumni chapter president; and Michelle Watkins, a proud alumna and the first Black woman elected to the Huntsville City Council. Their insights will offer a multi-generational perspective on Alabama A&M’s evolving mission and growing influence.

Founder’s Week marks a time of reflection, celebration, and unity as Alabama A&M commemorates 150 years of educating and empowering leaders. The University welcomes alumni, students, faculty, staff, and members of the broader community to participate in these landmark events as it continues its journey of excellence and transformation.
