AAMU Professor Serves Up Opportunity with 8th Annual Free Tennis Camp

Each summer, Alabama A&M University’s tennis courts come alive with the energy and excitement of children discovering the joy of tennis – many for the very first time. From June 16–27, more than 50 children, ages 5 to 12, participated in the 8th Annual Action Kids Tennis Camp, founded and directed by Dr. Janet M’mbaha-Zarnesky, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Kinesiology.

The free camp introduces tennis to children from underserved communities, many of whom have never held a racket before. Most participants are from minority backgrounds and are transported daily from Huntsville’s Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center to the Alabama A&M campus, where they receive not only expert instruction – but also rackets, tennis balls, T-shirts, snacks, water, and heartfelt mentorship from a dedicated team of volunteers.

“Teaching tennis to children from communities that often lack access to this kind of experience is my passion,” said M’mbaha-Zarnesky. “Tennis has traditionally been seen as an elite sport. We’re changing that. This camp is about expanding horizons – showing children that there’s more than just football or basketball out there.”

Launched in 2016, the Action Kids Tennis Camp is rooted in both service and scholarship. It follows a currriculum and uses equipment provided by the United States Tennis Association, supporting M’mbaha-Zarnesky’s mission to diversify the sport and promote lifelong health. Campers not only learn the fundamentals of tennis but also gain important life lessions in health, wellness, and teamwork.

A vital part of the health education component of the camp comes from Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, Dr. Sadguna Anasuri, who teaches campers about basic foods and nutrition, balanced eating, healthy habits, and emotional wellness. Through her guidance, children are introduced to essential life skills such as self-awareness, confidence, resilience, and empathy.

Anasuri emphasizes the importance of children’s mental health as a foundation for reaching their fullest potential. She is deeply committed to nurturing their psychological well-being and holistic development, helping them grow into responsible, emotionally strong, and socially aware young adults

“Our goal isn’t just physical education,” added M’mbaha-Zarnesky. “It’s about promoting total health – teaching children the value of movement, wellness, and community. And for parents working multiple jobs or unable to afford traditional camps, we’re filling a critical gap.”

To sustain the camp, M’mbaha-Zarnesky depends on grants, sponsorships, and a tireless team of volunteers. From recruiting University students and athletes to serve as mentors to managing behind-the-scenes operations, she leads with purpose and passion. This year there were 10 volunteers from Redstone Federal Credit Union.

M’mbaha-Zarnesky's unwavering dedication has earned statewide and regional recognition. In 2023, she was honored as a Redstone Federal Credit Union Community Champion, named one of five individuals making a transformative impact in the region. In 2024, she received the Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (ASAHPERD) Scholar Award – one of the organization’s highest honors – celebrating her contributions to scholarship and health education in Alabama.

“Everything I do comes back to the idea of empowerment,” she said. “I want our students to feel strong, capable, and truly seen for who they are.”
