AAMU Arts & Literary Exhibition Celebrates 150th During Louis Crews Classic Weekend

Alabama A&M University will honor its 150-year legacy with a vibrant celebration of creativity during the Arts & Literary Exhibition on Saturday, April 6, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the AAMU Event Center.

Free and open to the public, the exhibition is part of the University’s sesquicentennial celebration during Louis Crews Classic Weekend and will feature original works by students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Guests can experience art in many forms – including painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, music, and written works.

“This event is more than an exhibition,” said Dr. SanYvette Williams-Foy, alumna and Co-Chair of the 150th Anniversary Arts & Culture Subcommittee. “It’s a celebration of who we are not only as an academic community, but also a tribute to the creativity that has shaped our institution. It reflects a cultural legacy that continues to inspire new generations.”

A Historic Collaboration

As part of its anniversary year, Alabama A&M has partnered with internationally acclaimed artist Charles Bibbs to create a commissioned piece that will commemorate the University’s 150th Anniversary. The original artwork will be formally unveiled in December during the University’s Closing Ceremony, marking its introduction to the public and the beginning of sales.

Bibbs, celebrated for his signature blend of realism and abstraction, is recognized worldwide for works that honor African American heritage, strength, and resilience. His artistry will tell Alabama A&M’s story of triumph, growth, and cultural pride in a way that is both timeless and transformative.

“This project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Perry Caudle, Jr., a member of the Arts & Culture Committee. “Charles Bibbs has created a visual masterpiece that tells the story of Alabama A&M’s 150 years. Every piece collected also supports the University’s future.”

The Artwork and Its Availability

The commissioned piece will honor Alabama A&M’s 150-year journey, encapsulating its history, mission, and community impact in a vibrant visual tapestry. Multiple editions will be available for purchase – including exclusive remarques, fine art giclée prints, and offset prints. Proceeds will benefit the University by advancing scholarships, campus enhancements, and mission-driven initiatives.

Looking Ahead — and Celebrating Now

While the Bibbs commission will debut later this year, Saturday’s Arts & Literary Exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate AAMU’s creativity today. Visitors will enjoy an inspiring mix of visual and literary arts, music, and live entertainment, all reflecting the University’s cultural legacy.

The exhibition is Saturday, April 6, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the AAMU Event Center. Admission is free, and all are invited to join Alabama A&M University in celebrating 150 years of culture, creativity, and community during Louis Crews Classic Weekend.
